You have the choice of established houses in town and properties out of town. What's more you now have the choice of five acre blocks to build your own homestead, or if you can find one, buy a block of land in town and build.
I chose to buy an established property 3.3 klicks out of town. The property had dual titles making up 12 acres in total. I built a second house on the other titled lot. The land and its new house fetched $155k in 2005; then sold-on in 2006 for $225k. Today's market would see that 5.5 acre property sell easily for $350k and probably more as time heals the real estate blues.
There isn't much choice when it comes to rentals. They're not cheap and not great either.
